  Biography    
   
1 XuXing   XuXing is 15 years old, ethnic Han.  He is the youngest of 3 high   
    school age boys.  His good grades enabled him to enter this   
    premier school.  His parents are farmers and are deeply in debt due   
    to the sons’ school expenses.  Their crop is a total failure this year   
    because of the flood in their village.  He is determined to enter a   
    good college after high school.  
    Homeroom teacher:  Hard working. Good grades. Still owes tuition    
    and book fees this year.  
   
2 HeJiaJi   HeJiaJi is 16 years old, ethnic NaXi.  His home is in a poor and  
    remote region.  Both parents are farmers.  Although in poor health,   
    the father works odd jobs between farming seasons to support the 2   
    students.  JiaJi has always done well in school and well liked by   
    his teachers.  He is determined to enter a top university after high   
    school.  
    Homeroom teacher:  Diligent high achiever, good citizenship and   
    cheerful.  
   
3 WangYongFeng WangYongFeng is 16 years old, ethnic Han.  She is from a  
    traditional farming family.  Aged grandparents need medical   
    attention.  Both her brother and herself are in senior high.  Her   
    good grades enabled her to enter this premier school.  The parents   
    are under terrific financial burden this year.  
    Homeroom teacher:  Shy and quiet, has good grades and very   
    focused on her studies.  
   
4 HeGuoYun HeGuoYun is 16 years old, ethnic NaXi.  His family of four lives  
    in a “natural” village (in an undeveloped wilderness area).  The   
    high altitude, year-round harsh climate, and the poor soil condition   
    make life mean and difficult.  They rely on their potato and corn   
    crops.  They sell a few chickens and eggs to supplement their   
    farming income.    
    Homeroom teacher:  Home village is poor and in the high   
    mountains.  The family has no steady source of income.  
   
5 ZiWenJu   ZiWenJu is 15 years old, ethnic NaXi.  Her family lives in a poor   
    farming village.  Her mother is sickly.  Father’s small income   
    alone supports the 2 girls in school.  She is very shy.  Her family’s   
    financial situation is a heavy burden on her spirit.    
    Homeroom teacher:  She is very focused on her goal.  She has very   
    good study habits.  She is grateful for any assistance.    
   
6 ZhangQuiPing ZhangQuiPing is 16 years old, ethnic Han.  He is from a   
    farming family.  His 86-year-old grandmother requires medical   
    treatments at the hospital.  Mother is weak and anemic due to   
    malnutrition.  Father is an unskilled and uneducated day labor.    
    With his RMB15/day income, he could barely afford to medicate   
    his mother and feed his wife and children.  The parents would not   
    permit the boy to quit school so they sold their meager belongings   
    and borrowed from friends and relatives this year.  The whole   
    village was so proud of the boy’s achievement that they gather   
    what they could to send the boy onto the LiJiang School.  
    Homeroom teacher:  Very motivated.  Understands the   
    expectations from the family and the hopes of his home village are   
    on his shoulders.    
   
7 YangYingSheng YangYingSheng is 16 years old, ethnic Bai.  Both parents  
    are farmers.  The yield from their small field is very poor.  The   
    family often goes into debt in order to send the kids to school.  The   
    draught this year plunged the family deeper into debt.  The boy is   
    very quiet and very self conscious of his recent growing spurt.  He   
    is awkward with his long limbs and big feet.  His is grateful for the   
    opportunity to attend this prestigious school and vows to overcome   
    his shyness.  He is anxious about maintaining his high ranking in   
    his class.    
    Homeroom teacher:  The young man is still growing and is hungry   
    all the time.  He needs more food and nutritious food.      
   
8 YinFaLin   YinFaLin is 16 years old, ethnic Dai.  His village is a Dai   
    Nationality Village near the Golden Sand River.  This village is   
    one of the 10 poorest areas of HuaPing County.  The area was   
    under server draught condition for the past few years.  Current   
    family income is RMB600/year and is in urgent need of assistance   
    for the coming winter season.  Parents are corn and wheat farmers.    
    He has a 84-year old grandmother and a brother in junior high.  He   
    feels proud and very fortunate to be here at this 100-year-old high   
    school.    
    Homeroom teacher:  Although from a poor village in the   
    mountains, he has high hopes in a bright future.  He is very   
    focused on his present tasks and measures his improvement on   
    daily basis.  He is psychologically healthy and has good   
    citizenship: a perfect candidate for success.    
   
9 ZhangGuanYan ZhangGuanYan is 16 years old, ethnic Han.  Family lives   
    in the mountains and farms a small field.  The father is ill but   
    would not spend money on medicine.  The family goes into debt   
    each September in order to send her and the brother to school.  She   
    is determined to succeed in this school.    
    Homeroom teacher:  Although she is small but very smart and   
    hardworking.  She is curious about all new things and is very   
    sociable.  Although her life style is plain and modest, she is very   
    high-spirited.    
   
10 YangLiXiong YangLiXiong is 17 years old, ethnic MoSuo.  His home is   
    in a Natural MoSuo Village near the hot spring.  He has 2 parents   
    who live apart according to the MoSuo matriarchal family   
    structure.  There are 11 in his family clan:  2 grandparents, an   
    uncle, 2 aunts, mother, 2 sisters, a cousin and a nephew.  Only 5   
    are able to work in the small family rice/corn fields to support the   
    9 adults, 2 students and the baby.  He is very proud of his MuSuo   
    heritage and invites GNCCS to visit his home village.    
    Homeroom teacher:  Although he is from a remote undeveloped   
    regions (one of the poorest nationwide), he has a cheerful   
    personality, eager to learn and curious about all new things in the   
    outside world.
