Biography

1.         Class #268       YangXiaoSong M         MuoSo             NingLang         564

Background:     XiaoSong is a 15-year-old MuoSo boy from a far remote farming village.

There are no roads and no electricity in the area.  His peasant parents have no other source

of income to support two high school students (yearly income =<RMB300 per capita).

When the admission notice came, the family had less than 1/3 of tuition to register the

boy.  By August, the father had scraped and borrowed enough for XiaoSong to start school.

Teacher’s comment:      XiaoSong is a hardworking boy who has good grades and good

citizenship.  He has been awarded the 3-G honor many times during junior high.  He

leads a modest life, loves group activities and does not shy away from difficult tasks.

He plays the ethnic flute and is especially good at native tunes.

Student’s comment:      High school tuition for 2 students and mother’s heart medicines

are a burden too great for my parents.  I do not know how much longer my family could

hang on or how long I would be attending classes.  Yet, I shall not give up hope and my

life’s goal.  Please give me a chance.  I appeal to you for your favorable considerations,

a favor that I shall always keep in my heart.

2.         Class #268       HeXinRong                  M         NaXi                YuLong            584

Background:     XinRong is a 16-year-old NaXi boy from a NaXi village on the riverbank.

Since he was the only child, the parents did all right until his mother took ill last year

and the family finances abruptly turn sour.  Even with father’s extra jobs, their cash

reserve dried up while their savings previously loaned to others could not be recalled in

time to pay for the boy’s tuition.

Teacher’s comment:      XinRong is a bright boy with a cheerful personality.  He is

community minded and is always first to volunteer.  He lives modestly and loves to help

out others.  He has excellent academic records, won awards in speech and essay

contests. He loves soccer, writing, singing, speech making and exhibits leadership quality.

Student’s comment:      Because of my mother’s illness, my aged father’s supplement

income still could not support me in the LiJiang High School.  My family is in trouble.

3.         Class #268       ZiHaiYan                      F          Yi                     YongSheng       568

Background:     HaiYan is a 16-year-old Yi girl from a far remote Yi village with no

communication to the outside world and no roads.  Both parents are peasants.  Their

only income depended on their farm.  The yield had been poor due to poor soil condition.

In addition to school expenses for the two students, the family also relies on their small

farm to support the aged grandmother.

Teacher’s comment:      HaiYan has good grades and good citizenship.  She is

self-disciplined and has team spirit.  She loves art, sings and plays the ethnic flutes.

She loves group activities and is an all around model student.

Student’s comment:      My heart aches for my parents.  They try so hard to keep the

family fed.  The school expenses from both my younger brother and I only make their

burden heavier.

4.         Class #269       CunJin                          M         NaXi                YuLong            590

Background:     CunJin is a 15-year-old NaXi boy from a small NaXi village not far from

the ancient Stone Drum Township that has produced many scholars and talented NaXi

personages over the centuries.  His father did not graduate from junior high and mother

did not finish grade school.  The peasant parents grow tobacco on their farm for cash

income.  Their vegetable crop, unreliable as income, mostly ended up as feed for the

family pigs.  Their tobacco crop was equivalent to their lifeline when the two boys were

still in grade school.  Ever since CunJin entered junior high school their income from

their tobacco crops could no longer cover the extra expenses.  With CunJin in senior

high school, the family is in serious financial trouble.

Teacher’s comment:      CunJin loves sports. He has won many academic awards

especially in Math, Chemistry and essay writing contests.  He is straightforward

and easy-going.  He has adjusted well in school and gets along with his classmates.

Student’s comment:      Although my parents have doubled their workload on our farm

to keep my younger brother and I in school, we still could not make end meet.  I must

get educated to improve the life of my family.  I beg you to lend a hand and allow my

brother and I to complete our education.  I know we will succeed.

poorest households in the village.

Teacher’s comment:      YinSong received many academic awards and leadership awards.

Student’s comment:      My village is very poor.  I always do well in my classes.  I know

I will do well in the next three years.

WangXi’s school expenses put the family in serious financial trouble.

of the Chemistry award.  She is a very intelligent girl and works hard.  She has a quick

mind and has good attitude.  She is ambitious and sets high goals for herself.  She loves

art and loves to draw cartoons.

Student’s comment:      The world around me is moving forward.  My family faces such

of vegetables that my parents labor all day in the fields and carried on their bent backs

to the market under the torching sun.  In their sweat and tears, they have given me the

opportunity to challenge myself and to test my true potentials.  We have nothing but

we have each other’s love and support.  With tears in my eyes, I shall race towards the

future and finish with the strong ones.  I promise to be diligent in my studies.  I shall

repay you with my success.  I shall repay my parents with my achievements.  My

grandfather in the heavens will smile.

mice.  The family still owes their relatives money to restore the house damaged in the fire

younger brother’s kidney stone operation this year.  The father, under the pressure to repay
